You Don’t MEAN to Sound That Way? Then You Probably Do!

You don’t mean to sound what? Picky? Critical? Judgmental?

When you start any conversation with that kind of disclaimer, it actually directs your listener’s attention to look for THAT very quality.  And frequently, that’s exactly what they’ll find, whether you MEANT it to sound that way or not.

From motivational speaker, Linda Larsen, seriously looking for better ways to say things…

Motivational Speaker Linda Larsen, CSP has been described by meeting planners and audiences as "hysterically funny," and "riveting." 1. So true. So true. Reminds me of saying, “I hope this doesn’t upset you, BUT….here comes what will most likely upset you!” Great advice, Linda.

  2. To quote myself:  “You can say anything about anybody, as long as you start it out with, ‘Well, you know I don’t mean to be ugly!’ ”  That’s a good indication that what you are about to say is ugly!

  3. How about – ‘I don’t want you to take this the wrong way’ – yeah, then don’t say it!!!  You are so right on with this.  Does it also bug you when motivational speakers start a segment by saying ‘this is a true story’.  I totally disconnect wondering, what, are all the other stories false?  And, I am assuming all the stories I hear are true, so if you tell me this is a true story, it seems to me like a weird disclaimer.  Just my two cents!
