With a Little Help from My Girlfriends

Chicago2012WinnerGirlfriends rock! What would we do without them? Our girlfriends listen through the painful details, laugh so hard with us we cry, and cry with us until the laughter comes back.  In short, they keep us sane and connected. They let us know we’re not alone as we navigate each phase of our life.

I know first-hand the value of girlfriends, both through this blog, and as I’ve been part of a tight-knit circle of six women who’ve maintained our friendship for over 30 years. It hasn’t always been easy, with moves, marriages, children, divorces, careers, and everything else that life brings. But we’ve always made the effort to nurture our friendships because as we grow older, we realize how valuable this connection is. That's why we have made it a point to gather from our respective locations (one even journeys from Rome) and travel together every year for the past 21.

In fact, recent research from the Mental Health Foundation found that one in 10 people often feel lonely, and half think that people are getting lonelier in general. That’s why I was intrigued to learn of a social networking site called Social Jane. Similar to more traditional matchmaking sites (minus the romance element), Social Jane was designed to provide women with “a quick and convenient means to meet and connect with other like-minded women as friends and activity partners,” according to info from the site.

Janis Kupferer, the site’s founder, has said that “we have to nourish ourselves with connections.”

I couldn’t agree more! That’s why, after reading this, I hope you’re motivated to say no to something on your to-do list, and say yes to grabbing a girlfriend and go!  It’s time well-spent. In fact, it’s an investment.

  1. I always love how you talk about getting together with your girls once a year.  Even though your calendar is packed with being a funny motivational speaker, you still make time to meet with your gal pals.  I am so grateful that you are here on our site too – it helps me stay connected with my fav ladies!!!!

  2. Brilliant Ms. Colette!!! That is absolutely fabulous! As motivational speakers we are on the road soooo much, and sometimes the last thing we want to do is get on another plane and go somewhere. But when we travel like this – everything is different. It's sheer love and connection on that soul level with your girlfriends. PLUS – unlike when we travel for our keynote speaking business, on THAT kind of a trip – you don't have to be in charge all the time! You can let someone else make a few decisions and remember what floor you are staying on at the hotel! Yippee!

  3. "Nourish ourselves with connections."  Oh my yes.  There is something magical and medicinal about getting a good laugh going with friends.  I really love this reminder that it's ok to work hard, as long as you balance it out with some good hard play as well!  : )
