Where is your Attitude Seat today?

Motivational speaker Marilyn Sherman urges you to have a PMA

Attitude is a choice; Choose to be positive!

I look at life like as a big venue.  There are seats in three distinct areas in which you can sit:

– Balcony, Think of buying tickets at the last minute and you end up in the nose-bleed section with view obstructed seats.

– General admission, This is where most people sit. The seats aren’t bad, but they aren’t the best either.  Think of a comfort zone – they are comfortable seats, but they don’t stand out in any special way.

– Front-Row.  This is where life is lived!  This is the VIP section, the ‘behind the velvet rope’ seats. Ah, you guessed it, life is truly lived in the Front-Row!

As a motivational speaker, I want to inspire people to get out of the balcony seats of their life and move closer to the front-row – however they define the front-row for themselves.  Some people have seats all over the place.  Their work seat is in the front-row but their health seat is suffering in the balcony. Or, they are in great physical shape but go home to a less than healthy relationship.  I had an audience member say her relationship was so bad, it wasn’t even in the balcony – it was in the parking lot outside of this metaphoric venue!   So where do you begin to move your seats to the front-row of your life? I say, start with your attitude seat.  I am a firm believer that people with, as famous motivational speaker Zig Ziglar used to say ‘PMA – Positive Mental Attitude’, have it right.  They get along better with people, they make more sales, they have better quality relationships because people WANT to hang out with positive people.  Who wants to go have lunch with a negative Nelly?  All she will do is complain and whine and bring everyone else down.  The nice thing about your attitude is, it is absolutely RECESSION PROOF!  Your house may have lost all it’s value due to the economy, you may have to take on extra work because your work has had cut backs on support staff, your bonus may have been cancelled due to circumstances out of your control.  But when all things seem like they are going from general admission to balcony, you have 100% control over your attitude.  You can choose to have a front-row attitude anytime!  I read recently that you can’t be depressed and grateful at the same time.  You also can’t be angry and grateful at the same time.  Therefore, the best, most practical way to get your attitude seat in the front-row is to make a list of all the things you are grateful for.  When I speak on this topic, I tell my audiences to create a ‘win-list’.  Make a list of things that make you happy, grateful, inspired.  Then, when general admission attitudes start to creep in, then get out and read your win-list, add to it and get grateful.

Life is too short, start living it in the front-row!

Saving you a seat in the front-row, your attitude usher for the day, Marilyn Sherman

  1. Oh Marilyn, this is so true, and so well put. I like it when you said that you can’t be depressed and grateful at the same time – or angry and grateful at the same time. I would also add that tension and laughter can’t exist at the same time either. Don’t believe me? Try to lift a sofa while you’re laughing.

Today I will choose to be grateful. And let go of depressed and angry. There’s just not room.
