'tis the season to be jolly…
It's the hap-happiest time of the year.
I know that's what the song says, but for some people the holidays are anything but merry. For some people the holiday reminds them of families they don't have, loved ones they've lost, loneliness, pain, broken bodies, and broken hearts. And while a light may be shining on our Christmas tree, a light is shining on their hopelessness and despair. And so I take this moment in the middle of the holiday bustle, to send out a word of encouragement to those hurting this season. It might not make you feel any better, and it might not be the words you need to hear – but it's all I've got. And I send these words to the stars in the form of a prayer, and ask that the ruler of the universe find a way to get them to you in a way that you will know this message is meant just for you, and comes from something so much bigger than me.
Today I pray for those hurting this holiday season – the faces I've never seen, and the ones I have. I ask that you reach out to them in their dark lonely places and wrap them in a hug of comfort and peace. I ask that you wipe away their tears, and send someone to hold their hand or sit with them in the dark. I ask that you send a ray of hope, in the way that only you can. And I ask that you show me the opportunities right in front of me to be the light – that you give me the right words, or the right thing to do when there are no words. I ask that you break into my world of merry and rich blessings, and give me a heart for the broken. And let it not just last the season, but in the days to follow. I come to you much as the little drummer boy with nothing but a drum and a song, in the hopes that you can use what I have to help others find comfort this holiday season. And that my little light will be added to others until the darkness is overwhelmed. Let this be my Christmas prayer.
In your sweet name I pray,
