What’s Your Energy Boost?

It was an afterthought but it got me to thinking:  What can I add to the meal I’m making, right now, that will boost my health just a wee little bit more?  I know this sounds like I’m a crazy, overboard health “nut” but I promise you I don’t go around thinking this all the time!  That’s why it hit me so clearly today as I was making my lunch.

This midday meal is usually a salad of some sort so that I’m on my way towards my “leafy greens” quotient for the day.  Any mish-mash of colorful, chopped veggies can be thrown in there, a delicious fat (like avocado or walnuts) is always added, maybe a sprinkling of flax if it didn’t get mixed in with my morning eats, and a protein (usually last night’s chicken, fish, steak or hard boiled egg or beans).  Add a drizzle (2 Tablespoons max) of salad dressing and I’m good.

As I was putting the dressing away in the fridge the blueberries caught my eye.  Hmmm, I have a nice salad going on here but why don’t I throw a handful of fresh blueberries in there too and boost the health quotient of my salad by just that much more?  So I did.  And it was a delicious idea!

Back to my first thought:  Every time we’re on auto pilot preparing a decent meal for ourselves or our family, let’s take a pause and ask,  “What can I add that will boost the health quotient of this meal?”  It may not seem like a significant addition but if we do this to just one meal or snack a day, everyday, it will definitely add up to better health, energy and vitality in the long run!

Here are some food boosts that I use:

  • 1-2 Tablespoons raw nuts or seeds to a salad or brown rice (or other whole grain)
  • 1/3 of an avocado per serving
  • 1 piece of fresh fruit or 1/2 cup chopped
  • 1-2 Tablespoons dried fruit to cereal, salad or brown rice
  • chopped parsley,watercress, or any fresh herb to salad, pilaf, veggies or soup
  • 1-2 Tbl. flax, chia, hemp seeds to smoothies, yogurts, cereals, salads, baked goods
  • chopped green onion for garnish
  • anyone out there into green algae powder? (I used to stir it into my kid’s apple juice and call it Mutant Ninja Turtle juice…it worked for a while)

  1. Wow.  Great idea Polly. And you are soooo right! It’s about creating some new healthy habit. Hey Polly why don’t you see what it would cost to print up that question on small little colorful pieces of paper (with floating pics of blueberries, nuts’ etc).  They could be laminated or not. Magnetized or not. Create them as refrigerator magnets that act as an anchor/reminder to people as they are opening the frig to make this choice!!!!  Of COURSE put a little logo with your website info on it!!!!  They could be used as a giveaway at your events!  Like buy Polly’s TWO cookbooks and get the magnet for free!  Or just sell them.
