The fitness industry is morphing again!  As an exercising motivational speaker, I've seen many changes over the decades of instructing.  Those who work out or go to a gym are still a teeny tiny percentage of the population and the industry is trying to change that.  In order to reach more unfit Americans, clubs and corporations are offering 15 and 30 minute classes, gyms are opening up with $10 per month memberships and isolated muscle training is giving way to multi-joint/multi-muscle training. All with the objective of spending less time out of your day doing what you don't want to do to begin with but you know you should! 

Let me share with you one of my favorite, time-saving exercises:  The Plank.  It works a lot of muscle groups all at the same time yet your body remains (fairly) still.  I'm a visual learner so I've provided the illustrations to show the position and the main muscles that are involved (Are breasts allowed on this website?  We'll find out.).

My challenge to you is to assume the position during commercial breaks when you're watching TV at night.  It's perfect because most commercials are only 15 seconds, some are 30 seconds and the real test are the pharmaceutical 60 second commercials with their long list of side effects!  Create your own "side effects" (ba-dum-pum) by doing the Side Plank during those ads.  You'll be suprised how quickly you can be successful and build core strength with this daily routine – in 1 week.  Ready – Set – Plank!

  2. Polly, you would love my daughter, Casey, the Princess of Planks. She's forever on my case to "Get down and plank!" People have marveled at her in the gym considering the amount of time she can hold the pose. Between the two of you, I'm ready to Plank On! I'll start with those 15 second commercials so I don't end up in the pharma one.

Once again, you have motivated the motivational speaker group! We do planks in our hot pilates class and the side plank.  It is HARD!  The side blank especially is hard so I have to put a knee down.  But, you have reminded me that planks are not just for the pilates studio, I can do them in my living room or hotel room!  There goes another excuse….
