What Are You Up To?

I have this amazing professional actor friend with whom I communicate in cycles.  And, having not spoken with him for a while, I was thinking about calling him tomorrow.  In my mind I heard the first words I would say to him when he answered the phone:  “So, Ben, what are you up to?”  And then (again in my mind) I heard him rattle off a bunch of cool projects and things he had upcoming.

You see, he is ALWAYS up to something.  He’s ALWAYS creating something exciting, energizing and powerful in his life.  He was the mastermind behind a huge Broadway benefit for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  He’s working to create a dance company for the many talented homeless kids inSan Diego.  He’s trying to find a property to build a holistic health retreat.  And because he is ALWAYS up to something, he makes things happen.

Now we all have friends that if we call them and say, “what are you up to?” we could pretty much predict their answer.  Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, we know they’d say, “Oh nothing.  Just the same-old, same-old.” And consequently their lives reflect the same-old, same-old.

I suggest that if you want to create something new and exciting in your life, get “up to something” right now.  Think of one thing you have always wanted to do and just DECIDE that you will do whatever it takes to make it happen.  Things like:

  • Write that book
  • Remodel your bedroom
  • Join a non-profit agency and lead their fundraiser
  • Create a family tree
  • Become a “Big Brother”
  • Start guitar lessons

Anything – just make it something that you really, really, REALLY want and every single day take a least one action toward that goal.

So the next time someone asks, “What are you up to,” you can reply, “I’m so glad you asked!  I’m actually….”  And then fill in the blank with energy, passion and excitement.  Who knows, you may just be the shining example THEY need to see to get motivated themselves!
