Under Repair

When she saw the sign on the treadmill at the gym that read, “Under Repair,”  my friend Ellen remarked, “Isn’t that a positive way of stating it?  They usually say, ‘Out of Order.’”

So I got to thinking about that.  And here’s what I realized.

While I have at least progressed to the place in my life where, when someone asks me how I am, I don’t actually TELL them about how my back hurts or I’m getting a cold or my bunions are bothering me, I surely do spend a lot of time THINKING about how crummy I’m feeling.  And we KNOW it’s a fact, we can actually CREATE problems by focusing on the wrong things.

Doubt me?  Watch someone who says over and over again, “I’m such a klutz, I’m such a klutz, I’m a MAJOR klutz.”   And just see how many times they will trip over a non-existent bump on the floor.

What, you say?  Maybe they ARE a klutz?  Ahhhhhh.  One trip does not a klutz make, but if you focus long enough on that one trip, beat yourself up about it and DECIDE that you are klutzy because of it, then the old “self-fulfilling prophecy” laws set in to work.

So here’s the deal.  The next time you are feeling poorly, try telling yourself and others that you are “Under Repair.”  And, since the body is a self-healing organism, your statement will be accurate!

  1. Hey Linda – I really like this one because I totally agree!  Like I tell my audiences, ‘Up until today’ you’ve been lazy or disorganized, or whatever label they want to put on themselves.  But today is a new day!  Change your language, change your behavior!  Love it!

    • Good one, Marilyn!  I’m going to use that one.  We ALWAYS get people who say, “Well, it’s just not TRUE that I haven’t been ‘x’! I don’t want to LIE!”  So another way I ask them to phrase it is:

      “Historically, I have been “x”.  It’s a pattern I no longer choose to continue.”

      Rock on!
