As a funny motivational speaker who is always on the prowl for inspiration, I’m a sucker for those social media image quotes. You know the kind I mean: a picture with a thought-provoking line or two. There are the ones that make me laugh, “I started my new fitness program today by shopping online for shoes. Baby steps.” And the ones that tug at my heartstrings, “It’s easier to build up a child than it is to repair an adult. Choose your words wisely.”
I tend to forget them almost as soon as I read them. But one I saw recently has stayed with me. It said, “When was the last time you did something for the first time?” You mean other than buy a different brand of barbecue sauce? Huh. I was drawing a blank. I had to face the Truth. Talk about a rut! Then I came across this gem in an article in FastCompany.com: “New insights come from new people and new environments — any circumstance in which the brain has a hard time predicting what will happen next.”
Who couldn’t use some fresh insights? That’s when I decided to make a list of things I wanted to do for the first time. Even if I don’t get to all of them, at least it’s got me thinking outside the box – and outside the same old routine.
Here are four ideas from my list (some I’m more excited about than others):
1. Take a tango class with Blue Eyes.
2. Cook a roast (seriously, I never have).
3. Take me, myself and I out to lunch in the middle of a workday.
4. Run for half a mile without stopping.
What’s on yours?
