The BEST Way to Love the One You’re With

People who have actually died, and then come back to life consistently report an experience, or feeling or sense that they were confronted with two questions as they made their transition.  They were:

What did you learn in this lifetime and…How did you expand your capacity to love?

So if this is true, I got to thinking – Why not expand our capacity to love right now! And here’s a great way.

Tell your sweetheart, “I love you so very much.  And while I show you in ways that might work for me, I need to know – what lets YOU know that YOU are loved?  What could I do or say that would unequivocally tell you how much I cherish you?”

Get specifics. Does he want you to TELL him with words?  Does she like for you to simply LOOK into her eyes with that special look?  Does he like for you to hug him for no reason?  Does she like little notes, cards or gifts?

I absolutely did not know this when John and I first got married.

Because I love getting heartfelt cards that I can keep forever, I ASSUMED John would love them too!  So I bought him LOTS of great cards and poured out my heart into each one.  Imagine my disappointment when, not only did he NOT send ME bunches of cards, but he didn’t even put the ones I gave him into a some special mahogany box somewhere on a shelf where he could pull them out and look at them often!  (I know, you’re laughing.  I am too – now.)

But because we were able to get into communication and discover what each of us needs in order to feel loved, we are now good!  He gets me lots of wonderful cards – and I get him power tools.

Yes – love the one you’re with – the way THEY want to be loved.

  1. So beautiful Linda and so true! It’s the golden rule of love! Perhaps it’s just motivational speakers, but I adore love notes too. Especially when they’re unexpected. My sweetheart would prefer a good back scratching! And each daughter, something different. Excellent reminder to find our what THEY want and then give it to them…with love.

  2. Awesome post Linda! And so true! We often look for others to show love the same way we do. I may be waiting for him to bring me flowers – when he’s showing me love by mowing the grass. Thanks for sharing! Now I’m going to share!
