Straighten Up, Cheer Up, Power Up!

It's my job as a motivational speaker to talk about ideas that will help people be happier, healthier and more successful.  So call me REALLY happy when I find ONE idea that does all three!  And you won't believe what it is…

Stop slouching.

No, that's it. Just stop slouching.

According to a recent study at San Francisco State University researchers found a slouched or despondent body posture can lead to lower energy levels and feelings of depression.  It is also linked to causing career problems (people who slouch can appear disinterested or less "vital"), increased risk of death or illness, cutting off circulation and higher levels of stress.

Try it yourself! Walk around your house for only one minute, slouched over, shoulders rounded, looking down at the ground (you might also notice your breathing is more shallow).  For good measure even shuffle your feet as you slowly walk.  After one minute take an internal energy/mood reading from one to ten.  One is you are comatose and drooling in your lap, and ten is you just won an 80 million dollar lottery.  Remember that number.

Then walk around the house for one minute in a very erect posture. Head held high, briskly walking. Hey, put a smile on your face just for fun. Notice your breathing is fuller since you have more capacity for air.  When the minute is up, take another internal energy/mood reading.  I'll bet it goes up.

So do what your mommy told you to do a long time ago. Sit up straight! You'll be happy, healthier and richer for it!

  1. Linda I am so in alignment (ha!) with this research. I originally was turned on to this at a seminar I went to when I was 29 years old (so you know how LONG ago that was!). Following I was so moved by the ability to change your state by sitting properly, that as cheap as I was back then I went directly to Copenhagen furniture store and sprung for a $300 balance chair. Yup, I could have gone to Hawaii back then for that, but I smile as my butt is on that very chair to date. Sitting taller and smiling thinking of you. Thank you for reinforcing my investment so many moons ago.

    • Hmmmmm. So I'm wondering if you heard this information around the same time that I heard it! I was at a Tony Robbins event when I first got this concept back in the….um….well….a long time ago.

P.S.  I love Copenhagen furniture.  My living room and dining room furniture is from there and it's the coolest stuff I've ever had. Good investments I'm thinking!

  2. Yes, Linda! Probably the same seminar only in a different location. We've always been on the same path – only wish I knew you back then as well so we could have skipped and laughed more along the way.

  3. This is GREAT Linda! You all grew up in the world of motivational speakers – so while this is not new to you, it's new to me! And I've already tried it and it WORKS!!! Super yeah!

I also learned recently that something as simple as breathing can help me rejuvenate. I never realized how much shallow breathing I do. Deep breaths are heaven to a stressful day.

  4. I love reading all the posts by my fellow motivational speakers, but also the comments!  I learn so much!  And, I attended that same Tony Robbins event and used the concept in my seminars when I worked for SkillPath.  Posture, state, walk and talk with energy…I love this stuff! How fortunate we all are to be in tune with such great information and thanks for all of you writing and reminding me of it and introducing me to new stuff.  You all are awesome!  (As I sit up straighter in my chair!!!)
