Sometimes a Cigar is Just a Cigar

Sigmund Freud was smoking a cigar on stage once while he was giving a presentation. Freud, you know, was the one who always found psychological reasons for people’s actions – and many of those reasons were sexual in nature. So when an attendee at his presentation saw him smoking the cigar, he suggested that the good doctor’s action carried a more hidden meaning.

Freud’s reply was, “Sir, sometimes a cigar, is just a cigar.”

How many times do we assign a meaning to something – NOT because of what is going on out there in the world that we see or hear, but because of something going on in OUR heads?

I’m still a little woggy after taking some strong drugs yesterday to have a tooth pulled.  So right when I got out of bed this morning, thinking I was ungroggy enough to take my normal dosage of two happy hormone pills, I instead picked up a bottle (sure LOOKED like the right bottle) of a strong sleeping pill and took two of them.  Took them at 7 a.m.  After a good night’s sleep.

Do you suppose I have  some deep desire to check out?  Am I trying to run away? Escape? Get out of folding laundry and picking up dog poop?  Maybe I want to rejoin my mother ship..

I write this blog very laboriously as I fade in and out and can tell my forehead is heading once again to the keyboard.  And I’m quitting this blog post real soon.  Like now.

But I leave you with this. The reason WHY someone does something mysterious to us – is frequently just that:  A mystery.  Sometimes taking the wrong pill is just…taking the wrong pill.

My eyes are now slamming shut of their own free will now.  And I like it.

  1. This is hilarious! Not for you sleepy head who lost a day, but such a fun way to tell us about your mishap with a powerful message. Hope you’re feeling perky soon!

  2. You have penned some mighty good words for such a groggy head!  I have found that I like to think “a cigar is just a cigar” first, until proven otherwise.  It keeps this complex life a little more simple!

  3. Love this.  I am the queen of reading too much into things, and over thinking. It’s nice and relaxing to realize that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.  And it reminds me of my current goal in life – to judge a situation (first determining whether it even needs my judgment) by what has been presented instead of what I think has been implied.

  4. Even while under the influence you are hilarious!  I admire your determination to write even if it’s a bit foggy for you!
