So Today I Start My Novel

I have been wanting to do this for years – write a novel. I have no good reason except that I just want to do it. It’s not in my business plan. It won’t help me get more business. I really don’t have the time. I’m not sure it will be any good. It will require some skills I don’t have. I really don’t think it will be of interest to any publishers, and it’s not the kind of book I myself would pick up and read. So why do it? Because I want to. Because just the thought of it gives me goose bumps and fills me with excitement.

I was booked as a motivational speaker at an event recently where the CEO asked us when was the last time we really felt alive? It was a question that fascinated me. When are the times that I feel really alive? Sure, speaking comes close. Empowering people comes close. But there are some things (like working in prison ministries with the One Day With God Camps) that simply electrify me. Writing a novel, is one of those things. So it’s time to stop making excuses, and do it. Just because.

So what about you? When was the last time you really felt alive? Been a while? Is it time to get a little piece of that back? You deserve it. You don’t need a good reason. And it doesn’t always have to fit your business plan. Make it part of your life plan. Carve out the time. And I think it may actually bless your business in ways you didn’t expect. And if it doesn’t, I have a feeling you won’t care.

So here I go. Today, I start my novel.

  1. I’m thrilled you’re starting because it means you’ll be finished sooner! Can’t wait to read as you truly have the gift. It is built into your DNA. And you inspire me!

  2. You are SUCH a fabulous writer, Kelly, and I am so excited to see you put your talents to use in this way! Plus – have you ever noticed that it’s the people who have SOOOO much to do (you’re a mom, a HIGHLY in demand/working all the time speaker, a wife, prolific writer of tributes and a bazillion other things) – YOU are the ones who do MORE!  Such a cool phenomenon.  Let me be the first one to buy the book!

  3. Thanks ladies. It should be finished by Friday. Ha, ha, ha. This project won’t be so easy to whip out. Funny that it’s taken me this long to get to the one thing I wanted to do in the very beginning. Hhhhmmmmm. Don’t give me too much credit – this is like handing me a credit card and dropping me into a shoe store. It won’t ever feel like work. Of course, I had to go out and buy three new notebooks, two new sets of pens, a new lap desk, a set of herbal tea, and an ipad app for novel writers. :)

  4. So proud of you for not only starting your novel but for shouting it out to all of us!  That’s awesome!  It makes it so much more real, doesn’t it?  If you need any support – just look to us, your fans, and we’ll help in any way we can.  I can’t wait to read it!!!!
