Size Does Not Matter

Guest Post by Business Keynote Speaker Meridith Elliott Powell: Actually – Size Does NOT Matter! 3 Reasons To Always Deliver

If you grew up like me, you had a mother who was full off-the-wall advice. Things like take “mad money” on a date, in case he leaves you; remember to have fresh socks in case you buy new shoes, or my personal favorite, always wear clean underwear, in case you get into an accident.

Now while there is not enough therapy in the world to undo some of the insecurities advice like that has given me, there is some wisdom in my mother’s words. Hidden at the root of all those crazy sayings are the messages to always be prepared and to always do your best. No matter the situation, little or small, important or trivial, her words are a constant nudge that I always need to deliver.

I was reminded of this just a few short weeks ago, when I was asked to “fill in” for speaker friend, Ken, at a regional event for financial service professionals. Delayed by travel, Ken asked if I could help out. As the event was just a few hours up the road, I was happy to. Happy but not so motivated, I had been working a lot, this was a small event, and other than being a good person I did not see much return on investment.

That is where my mother comes in, her little voice reminded me that  “anything worth doing was worth doing well.” I put on my clean underwear, new socks, grabbed my mad money and ran up the road to deliver. Sure enough, just what I feared, small room and smaller audience;  I rolled my eyes,  took a deep breath and delivered the keynote of my life.

While I was proud of my performance, I thought who cares no one was here. Then  two women approached me, the first was a representative from a large corporation, responsible for running fifteen of their corporate events; the second, the incoming President of an association that I had been trying for years to get in front of. Both were ready standing there, calendars pulled out, ready to book me.

As we looked at dates,  I could see my mother giving me that “I told you so look” that I have come to realize means she really does know everything. Including the three reasons why it is critical you always need to be prepared and deliver:

1. Never Know – who you are going to meet or be in front of. Successful people know the best opportunities and the right connections happen when you least expect them.

2. People’s Time – whether you are giving a motivational keynote, making a sales call or servicing a client, people are giving you their time, and in today’s world time is critical.

3. Size Doesn’t Matter – it is not the size of the crowd or the title of the person, but the impact that you make that determines your success.

  1. Motivational speakers could probably stand in line to share a similar story of unexpected greatness resulting from service. Yet, I can still benefit from the reminder, Meredith. Your takeaways are solid and filled with truthful advice. Thank you!

  2. I love how the universe works…sometimes…This is a great testimony to motivational speakers spreading their message with deep passion every time they present.  We're in it because we love what we get to share and hopefully help someone grow.  Love this post, Meridith and don't forget that dime for a phone call!

  3. BRILLIANT stuff, Meridith! Applicable, of course, to motivational speakers, but as you allude, to so many areas of our lives. I can just see you knocking it out of the park – even if there was no one in the stands to see it! Yay YOU!!!
