Simple Words to Use…for When There Are No Words

Your-Communication-Connection-Speaker-Colette-CarlsonA good friend has just gotten the news no one wants to hear: her test results show cancer. She tells you her diagnosis over the phone, and instantly you’re hit with all kinds of emotions – concern, sadness, sympathy, and worst of all, the knowledge that there is nothing you can do to make this situation what it isn’t. Your next thought is to say something to her to make her feel better. Certainly, the right words from you will lift her spirits, give her hope. Problem is, what are the right words? 1. Great post, Colette. A must read for anyone who lives on the planet and has friends, co-workers or family. I have a psychologist friend who once suggested words very similar to some of the ones you included in your post – and they have served me very well. I can now add some new ones to my toolbox! Thanks!!

  2. I love the "Don't call it a journey unless we're going on a cruise!"  Yes, people need to read these suggestions on what to say. It's so much better to say 'I don't know what to say' then to say something insensitive.

  3. I saw Emily on Good Morning America and was so taken with her and her much needed work!  I've been in that position of angst where I had no idea what to say, didn't say anything and felt horrible for it!  Thanks for posting her work, Colette!
