Shouda Coulda Woulda

Dripping clockAre you looking for a GREAT time-waster?  Then I have a fabulous one for you. And I do understand that as a motivational speaker on communication, I should be telling you about time SAVERS – but I just couldn't resist this one.

Look at someone who did something wrong. Something that he SHOULD not have done. Something that he SHOULD have known better than to do. Look at him long and hard and go over in your mind all the reasons why he SHOULD not have done that stupid, idiotic, ridiculous thing.  And if you really want to waste some serious time – then go ahead and tell him why he SHOULD not have done that thing.

Total. Waste. Of. Time.

Yes, it makes perfect sense that he should have known better. And - apparently – he didn't. Or he missed the cues, or forgot, or got hit on the head by a falling tree, or any number of legitimate reasons. So rather than waste your valuable time going around in crazy circles in your brain, just stop.

If what he did directly impacts you – then by all means, address the issue.  Tell him why what he did didn't work for you and ask him for something different next time. Be specific, be respectful, be clear and unapologetic.  But let go of your every instinct to tell him WHY HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE DONE THAT STUPID THING!

Now – you can get back to doing something FUN!

  1. Such beautiful truth, Linda. Grew up with a great Dad BUT (yes, I know that's an eraser word BUT it is truth) he didn't miss a chance to point out my mistakes and tell me what I should have done. Even though it drove me batty I have to fight the natural urge to do the same with those I love. Even when I now know better. Even when I kid myself that I'm being loving and gentle in my approach. Thanks for reminding me to zip it and just have fun today while catching up with my daughters.

  2. BIG time waster and BIG energy drainer as well!  You would think I could remember the moment I figured this out but I can't.  All I know is that it was a huge aha moment and relief to know I didn't have to worry my pretty little head about someone else's stuff.  This helps to keep stress way down!  Spread the news!
