Seduced by Food?

As a motivational speaker on health and wellness, I am always trying to stay up on the latest nutritional and fitness research.  I find it all fascinating although some articles can be a bit dry and challenging to trudge through.  Why, oh, why can’t some expert come up with a gripping read like, oh I don’t know, “50 Shades of Health?”

But I may have just stumbled upon almost as exciting a book!  It’s called “Breaking the Food Seduction” by Neal Barnard, M.D.  Of all the nutrition books out there this one caught my eye because of the word seduction.  I use the phrase; “We are seduced into eating unhealthy, we are seduced into being lazy…” in one of my presentations so I was intrigued to see the word used for the same subject matter on which I speak.

And I’m very encouraged after reading just his introduction.  Here are some quotes from his intro that really made an impact and has me jazzed to read on!

  • “What if your blood sugar and hormones were in such perfect alignment that you were never attracted to the unhealthy foods?”
  • “It is not gluttony, weak will, or an oral personality that leads you to the refrigerator, at least not for the most part.  It is not your fault that foods act as they do.  It is a special property of the foods themselves that causes them to be so addicting.”
  • “Seductive foods are like drugs – they affect our brain just enough to keep you hooked.
  • “Chocolate stimulates the same part of the brain as morphine.  It’s a drug, not a bad one, or strong one, but strong enough to keep us coming back for more.”
  • “When you break the food seduction and stop the downward spiral of weight gain, poor self-esteem, achey joints and low energy, the physical symptoms melt away.”
  • “When fattening foods serenade you, you can turn down the volume.”

Do any of these quotes get to you?  They do me and I can’t wait to read on and share Dr. Bernard’s research and a handful of his tips to help us all break our food seduction!
