Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say

Your-Communication-Connection-Speaker-Colette-CarlsonLate last week I flew to Richmond, VA for Executive Women International’s Academy of Leadership. I taught, "Leadership: It All Begins with You!" Here's a takeaway:  say what you mean and mean what you say.  Credibility is key to being an effective leader. And leadership doesn't require a title, it's a state of mind whether you're an executive assistant, business owner, sales person, motivational speaker or cashier at the grocery store!

So as I was checking in for my flight on the airline's website I was greeted with a big banner in bright blue across the top of the screen:  Where you sit is YOUR choice!  I click the button to select seats and get a message:  Seat selection is unavailable for your flight.  I had to chuckle.  So much for my “choice”!

We all know the back story:  airlines are trying to increase revenue by enticing us to upgrade to premier seat selection.  Get priority boarding and avoid the dreaded middle seat where you have to wrestle for an armrest for a small extra surcharge.   But the moral of my story….if you say anything, especially with a big bright banner –back up your word with action steps or you’ll never be credible. Two cents from your stuck-in-the-middle again motivational speaker!

  1. Hahaha, so true Colette!  This message certainly applies to us motivational speakers when we promise our clients a specific outcome from our speaking topic.  We’d better deliver just what we say we will deliver!  Sorry you got stuck in the middle.

  2. Yes, it’s amazing how just the simple act of delivering on what you promise is a dying art. I am constantly amazed at the number of companies that do so much to tell me they believe in customer service – and then don’t bother to get my order right. Unfortunately, in today’s economy, these companies will lose business and probably never get that customer back. Thanks for sharing Colette!

  3. I like to take the message one line further: Say what you mean, mean what you say and don’t be mean when you say it!  Frenchie gave me an unsoiled compliment this morning saying that I am a nice person.  It was such a wonderful thing to hear.  Even when people are in conflict, I believe you can discuss, debate, challenge and be nice at the same time.  This speaks to the heart of your message Colette about speaking and living your truth.

  4. You bet, Marilyn. I so agree with speaking your truth — saying what you mean and meaning what you say with compassion, grace and tact!
