Re-energize by being a tourist in your own city

Fun things to do in Vegas off the strip

Visiting the beauty of Las Vegas

Last week we had a last minute visitor come in from France and we suddenly wanted to show off our little city of Las Vegas.  She had plans in NYC that fell through so her three freed-up days led to a last minute trip to visit us.  She hadn’t seen Vegas in over 20 years and we wanted to show her what a great place it is.  So, we became tourists in our own city!  We discovered there is a new visitor’s center at Red Rock Canyon that we didn’t know existed.  We drove up to Mt. Charleston and found a hiking trail that we had never been on before.  We even went to a Rock-Orchestra show at the new Smith Center that was AMAZING!  We had never been to the Smith Center before and thoroughly enjoyed being in the box seats (last minute purchase – literally minutes before the show started- were the only seats left).  And, as we were walking through the Palazzo Hotel I saw a sign for a Rare Book Store that I thought would be interesting to our friend due to the fact that she is a children’s book publisher in France.  And, being in Las Vegas, the store was still open as we were wandering around at 11:45pm.  As we were looking at first edition copies of Winnie the Pooh, and Pride and Prejudice, I stopped to take in the moment.  In 36 hours, we had done more in Las Vegas then we would normally do in a year!  And, without pre-planning, we managed to find some amazing, unique, fun things to do last minute.  I was re-energized as I was reminded what a beautiful place I live in!  So just for today, or even this weekend, put on tourist goggles and see your city with a new set of eyes.  And, if you’re plans ever bring you to Las Vegas, check out these non-strip things to do!

  1. What fun that must have been for all of you!  Thank you for the list of non-strip attractions because I will be out there in another year for my youngest son’s 21st birthday.  And I’ll take your great advice and discover new places and events in my town too!

  2. What a wonderful suggestion, Marilyn. I’m all about a stay-cation to rediscover what’s happening in our own neck of the woods. That’s why I’m sticking around this Labor Day Weekend. Great ideas for next trip to Vegas too.

  3. What a great post, Marilyn. I would LOVE to see your city through your eyes. I’m sure it will involve all the front row seats. :)

  4. What a cool idea, Marilyn!  I was thinking something very similar on Saturday when I was wandering around our Farmer’s Market downtown… But you took it to a new level!  There are SO many places to discover in our own home towns and now I want to go do just that!  Thanks for the suggestion!
