One Phrase That Will keep You From Those Dreaded Tasks

When I wake my son up on Sunday morning, I am very careful to tell him that today we get to go to church, instead of today we have to go to church. It's a tiny difference, that results in a big shift in attitude. 

There are tasks we all dread. And while we may not have a choice about it, we certainly have a choice about how we look at it. So take a look at all the times you say I have to and change it to I get to. It just might make that task less dreadful.

Gotta go. I get to go workout now.

Yeah. Too soon.

I GET to finish writing my script for my training video!!!  But first I GET to clean out every drawer, mop my floors (can't remember the last time I did THAT) and wash EVERY item in my closet (you know how things seem to get unfresh when they've hung there for a year without being worn, right?)  Funny how I really DO look forward to any tast that keeps me from writing that darned script.  So – I RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND – say, with feeling, "I REALLY HONESTLY AND SERIOUSLY GET TO WRITE THAT SCRIPT!!!" HOW FORTUNATE AM I?????" 

    You know, that actually does feel different. I'm shutting down MSR now, hanging up my mop and broom and getting back to the script…

  2. I GET to blog with incredible woman!! Had to chuckle Linda at your cleaning to avoid the work. What's the first thing I do yesterday after finally returning from my wicked, wonderful whirl on the road — my first day home? Rip off all the sofa cushions, wash, dry, vacumn the bottoms and reorganize three drawers. Part of me was too tired to think, but couldn't just sit on the couch and be unproductive. I GET I'm neurotic.

  3. Ooh, Kelly, this might be JUST the wording I can work into my presentations as a motivational speaker on health and wellness ; "You guys get to eat your 7th salad of the week!!"  I can see it already works for you as you head out to the gym :)

  4. I get to get back on track after speaking at a food conference – not just food, but snack food that I got to take back to my room!  Ahhh, even motivational speakers need a perspective shift every once in ahwile.  Thanks for this Kelly!
