Oh No, No, No, No, No….

Have you ever had this happen?  You say something that isn’t accurate.  Then the person you are talking to responds with five, six, or seven rapid, emphatic “no’s”.

This happened to me the other day when I took back one of three fruit trees that we bought at a nursery.  I THOUGHT I was taking back the plum, but apparently I was not.  They all looked alike to me…

When I told the lady, “I was informed I could bring back this tree since it seems to be losing all its leaves very rapidly.  We bought three trees last week – and I think this one is the plum.”

She QUICKLY responded, with an unmistakeable smirk on her face, “Oh no, no, no, no, no.  THIS is a nectarine tree. They don’t look ANYTHING alike.”

Several responses leapt to my mouth.  None of which were particularly pleasant.  I stood there trying to sort them all out and figure out which one to let loose into the world.

“Oh wow, thank you for pointing out how stupid I am.”  No, not a good choice.

“Well then, aren’t you just the smartest dang thing this side of the Mississippi?”  No, not good either.

“Listen, Einstein, you don’t have to be so flippin’ condescending!” No, no, no, no, no (Ironic, I know.)

So I settled on a default response that usually works.  I used a little self-deprecating humor and responded with a chuckle, “Clearly I’m not a fruity person. I have been called a fruit cake before….  But that’s not helping me now, is it? Ha ha!”

She couldn’t help but smile.  She got me a new tree and I didn’t inflict bodily harm on her. Crisis averted.

From your motivational speaker, Linda Larsen, who doesn’t even LIKE fruit cake!!
