Got a habit to break or a goal to achieve? There’s an app for that! It’s called Lift, and it’s free. The company’s tag line, “Lift helps you achieve your goals, big or small,” seems a bit ambitious, but any tool that can support us in making behavioral changes is a winner. Here’s how it works. You pick the goal you’re setting, then each time you practice it, you get to swipe the screen and voila! Lift keeps track for you. In an odd way, it’s strangely gratifying to see that little frequency chart fill up. It’s also interesting to see how many others are sharing your goal.
Currently, exercise is the most popular, with more than 75,000 participants, along with goals like drink more water, write, get to sleep by midnight, and meditate.
If you’re choosing to break a habit, remember to replace it with another for greater success. If you always grab a dark chocolate goodie in the late afternoon for a boost, don’t just take away your treat and leave a void. If so, your mind will likely tease and torment you to “just take a little bite” and the next thing you know you’ve downed the entire bar. Rather, replace it with a new habit, whether that’s a 10-minute walk or a bag of fat free popcorn. You’ll have something new to fill the void that moves you closer to your goal.
Then give yourself a Lift by tracking your success! What habit are you going to make happen?
