“Those of you in the exit row have extra leg room that comes with extra responsibilities!” said the Southwest flight attendant. The 93-year-old man sitting next to me turned, our eyes connected, and through the power of laughter, we instantly bonded.
Although my intention on the short flight was to read one magazine grabbed from the sky-high pile back in my office, my plans changed. Maybe it’s because my own father is 87 now, but when I looked into this man’s crinkled eyes, I knew the knowledge of how to look leaner, longer and 10 pounds lighter instantly — was going to have to wait!
Life Lesson #1: When frustrated with another, look in the mirror.
Bob was off to visit the older of his two daughters. “I stayed four days with my youngest one over the holidays, but with this one, I can only stay three days as she’s too much like me!” His comment made me reflect on a funny truth in life with my own girls. Oftentimes the little things that drive us nuts about others are the same qualities we have in spades. The reason the control-freak in the office might drive you to drink is because it frustrates you not to have it YOUR way!
Life Lesson #2: School is Never Out for the Pro
Not only does Bob show up weekly for the Seniors Computer Group of San Diego, but he’s Vice President of Membership – 103 members strong! Next time I’m learning a new app and wanting to throw my phone across the room, I’m going to visualize Bob for a dose of inspiration and perspective.
Bob, like my father, exercises daily. Guess I didn’t need to read that magazine after all!
