You spend a lot of money hiring motivational speakers like me to teach your employees how to deliver excellent customer service. While I'm sure those programs are all worth it, you might be forgetting one little thing that isn't such a little thing – the smile. I've been doing my own little consumer research project lately, and watching to see who smiles at me and who doesn't. I'm watching in restaurants, hospitals, stores – anywhere I spend my money. And based on what I've seen so far – I'm sadly discouraged at how few people smile at me, or even look at me for that matter. And I live in the South!

The other day I had an appointment with my local healthcare provider, located on the fourth floor of a busy building – all owned by the same healthcare group. I kid you not, EVERY person I passed looked up at me and smiled. Every one. Didn't matter where they were sitting – what they were doing – or how busy they were. They stopped, looked up, and smiled. I felt like I was in an episode of the Twilight Zone. By the time I reached my destination I was grinning like a fool. Never have I seen something so powerful. It was obvious that those people weren't just the happy ones in my city – or the ones who actually liked their jobs. It was obvious that somewhere along the way they had been trained to smile. And it stuck. So here's a tip that just might get you business – teach your people how to smile – even if they don't mean it. I think you will create a more positive experience for your customers which might just turn into more business. And if not, well at least your employees will be happier.

  1. By any chance were you at Ochsner Health System in LA for that service, Kelly? They have a 10/5 rule that has shown an increase in everything from happiness to patients' recommending their facility more to friends and family. If anyone who works in their hospitals (doctors included) walk within 10 feet of another person (anyone!) they MUST give eye contact and smile. Walk within 5 feet they MUST say "Hello." Don't you just love it?!!! I was blessed to be raised by a father who smiled and said hi to literally everyone he encountered so I thought that was normal growing up. Little did I realize what an incredible customer service, no human, gift he was giving me. Smile on!!

  2. I can just imagine how all those smiling faces affected you!  That's a lesson I hope I've passed on to my two boys:  Make eye contact and smile.  Translating that to the business world, specifically customer service, should be #1 priority.  

  3. EXCELLENT, Kelly! Yes! I, and every motivational speaker on customer service on the planet have been talking about this forEVER! I think people actually GET the concept of this -but they are wired to DO otherwise. I loved that Mirror technique people were espousing for telephone sales people for so long. You remember the one – put a mirror by your phone and look into it when you are talking. If there is no smile looking back at you – PUT one there!
