Motivational Speaker Says, “I Know You Can’t…”

motivational_speaker_linda_larsen_questionsMy colleague, friend and brilliantly fabulous motivational speaker, Kelly Swanson posed an interesting question in a recent blog entitled Motivational Speaker Encourages You to Ask WHAT IF? In it she suggests that we could find all kinds of solutions, answers and great ideas if we just slow down long enough to ponder the question, "what if."  And I'd like to take that great idea one step further by adding a qualifier onto the front end. Here's the question I'd love to see posed:

"I know I can't. But what if I could…?

I think we are so used to proclaiming that we can't do something – that we stop right there.  "I can't." Period. The end.

But WHAT IF, we follow that proclamation with Kelly's fabulous question? I believe, just as she says, that it could open up a whole set of additional questions. Like, "I know I can't. But what if I could? What would I have to do next? How would I need to be THINKING right now? What's the FIRST step I could take? Who could help me? What's right in front of me that I've been missing all along?"

Let me test this:

I know I can't lose these last stubborn ten pounds. But if I could, what's the first thing I could do…?

I know. I know. Walk away from the bowl of ice cream.

  1. Love it! I'm going to add this to my personal script right now. And share it!  Motivational speakers rock!!!

  2. I know I can't finish my book by July.  But if I could I'd have to reset my priorities and find the extra time 3 days out of the week.  Hey!  I really know I can do this!!!  I love my motivational speaker friends!

  3. This is great – a new way of self-talk and acknowledging what's in front of us.  Guitar virtuoso and motivational speaker Mike Rayburn has an amazing keynote and book called 'What If?' and he too suggests you say, "I know I can't but what if I could?" It's so powerful!  Thanks for sharing this!

  4. Dig this because it gets us to refocus on posibilities…and increase the likelihood we'll do the work to get where we CAN go. Well said. From fellow professional speaker who needs to walk away from more than the ice cream to lose those 10 stubborn pounds.
