My colleague, friend and brilliantly fabulous motivational speaker, Kelly Swanson posed an interesting question in a recent blog entitled Motivational Speaker Encourages You to Ask WHAT IF? In it she suggests that we could find all kinds of solutions, answers and great ideas if we just slow down long enough to ponder the question, "what if." And I'd like to take that great idea one step further by adding a qualifier onto the front end. Here's the question I'd love to see posed:
"I know I can't. But what if I could…?
I think we are so used to proclaiming that we can't do something – that we stop right there. "I can't." Period. The end.
But WHAT IF, we follow that proclamation with Kelly's fabulous question? I believe, just as she says, that it could open up a whole set of additional questions. Like, "I know I can't. But what if I could? What would I have to do next? How would I need to be THINKING right now? What's the FIRST step I could take? Who could help me? What's right in front of me that I've been missing all along?"
Let me test this:
I know I can't lose these last stubborn ten pounds. But if I could, what's the first thing I could do…?
I know. I know. Walk away from the bowl of ice cream.
