Motivational Speaker Moments of Merriment

Motivational speaker Colette Carlson in PJs
Motivational speakers find themselves in unusual places and situations given the volume of travel and variety of clients. I’m blessed to be one who is pleasantly surprised and delighted by these circumstances.

For example, while speaking at a “Bed and Breakfast” themed hospital evening event, I came out in my PJ’s. No, I didn’t wear my usual coffee-stained, thin white nightgown given the bright stage lights. After all, the nurse attendees had already seen enough sad body parts that day. Instead, I wore a two-piece black/white set that even room service staff can swallow. Ironically, the pattern almost matched the bedding on stage! After a wonderful evening, the last thing I wanted to do was change back into my business suit given I had a two plus hour drive back to the airport hotel to catch a 5:45 am flight. So I didn't. Never did I anticipate witnessing a crazy brawl between locals at a seedy gas station in the middle of nowhere at midnight. When they angrily glanced my way, I’m certain it was the PJ’s that gave me a pass! That, or they assumed I was crazy.

Just this week, after a fun-filled day of speaking, my female client invited me to join a small group in their hotel suite. Little did I know it would turn out to include a viewing of The Bachelor’s Season Finale. Although I stopped watching after Season I, these ladies could recite names, dates and places from all ten years’ worth of shows. Grabbing a cool, refreshing beverage and a slice of pizza, I settled in to watch Juan Pablo in action. But it was the group’s reactions that had me stiches.

I’ve almost been killed by a distracted, foreign taxi driver who was attempting to share a magazine spread of his prior professional soccer days. While driving 90 minutes to another airport after a flight cancellation, I was privileged to hear about another driver’s incarceration. Mary’s story was both incredible and heart-breaking, and she was enjoying her newly-found freedom.

As I said earlier, I am blessed to be in this profession loaded with unexpected, delightful moments. Surprise me….share one of your stories.

  1. FABULOUS example of "My Crazy Life as a Traveling Motivational Speaker!" I LOVE this, Colette! Thank you for sharing some of your experiences. They make mine sound much more normal!

  2. Well Colette Carlson, the audience loved you in one second when they saw you come out, and when they saw that your PJs matched the bedding they loved you even more because they thought you had gone to the trouble of finding a matching set. Before you even opened your mouth, you were a hit. Why? Cause you had gone the extra mile to make it special for them. And because you had taken a risk. You decided to go big, not for yourself, but for them. That's what it's about. So proud of you.

  3. I still remember the moment when I was on stage and the toilet paper I had stuffed under my toes to make my shoes fit – burst out in a wad of white wet goop and landed at the feet of the people in the front row. We screamed with laughter. When you're a funny motivational speaker, surprises like that are golden!

  4. Oh Colette, this is so fun!  I call these Travel Treasures!  It helps me so much to look at every encounter as a Travel Treasure… which may lead to a great story from the platform : )   I particularly love the cab driver theme yo have going on!

  5. What a dream to present in PJ's!  I love it!  One of my funny platform stories happened this past year. I was setting up my chairs on stage for my Front-Row speech and I literally fell off the back of the stage.  Half the audience had already trickled in to the ballroom and for them, one moment I was there, and the next I was gone.  The funny part was it was a keynote for a healthcare company and the EMT's that were immediately by my side. You may wonder how they got there so quickly?  They had a booth in the tradeshow and I had met them earlier!  It was funny. I was able to laugh, thankfully no damage was done.  Only short term memory loss.  It was funny. I was able to laugh, thankfully no damage was done. :)

  6. As if helping the resort chef in a cooking demo up on stage wasn't enough of a twist, he challenged me to a parsley chopping contest!  At the word "Go" I started in with my fastest chopping technique and he held up his baggie of pre-chopped parsley yelling, "Done".  Fun surprises add lots of laughs for the audience, and the speaker!
