Motivational speakers find themselves in unusual places and situations given the volume of travel and variety of clients. I’m blessed to be one who is pleasantly surprised and delighted by these circumstances.
For example, while speaking at a “Bed and Breakfast” themed hospital evening event, I came out in my PJ’s. No, I didn’t wear my usual coffee-stained, thin white nightgown given the bright stage lights. After all, the nurse attendees had already seen enough sad body parts that day. Instead, I wore a two-piece black/white set that even room service staff can swallow. Ironically, the pattern almost matched the bedding on stage! After a wonderful evening, the last thing I wanted to do was change back into my business suit given I had a two plus hour drive back to the airport hotel to catch a 5:45 am flight. So I didn't. Never did I anticipate witnessing a crazy brawl between locals at a seedy gas station in the middle of nowhere at midnight. When they angrily glanced my way, I’m certain it was the PJ’s that gave me a pass! That, or they assumed I was crazy.
Just this week, after a fun-filled day of speaking, my female client invited me to join a small group in their hotel suite. Little did I know it would turn out to include a viewing of The Bachelor’s Season Finale. Although I stopped watching after Season I, these ladies could recite names, dates and places from all ten years’ worth of shows. Grabbing a cool, refreshing beverage and a slice of pizza, I settled in to watch Juan Pablo in action. But it was the group’s reactions that had me stiches.
I’ve almost been killed by a distracted, foreign taxi driver who was attempting to share a magazine spread of his prior professional soccer days. While driving 90 minutes to another airport after a flight cancellation, I was privileged to hear about another driver’s incarceration. Mary’s story was both incredible and heart-breaking, and she was enjoying her newly-found freedom.
As I said earlier, I am blessed to be in this profession loaded with unexpected, delightful moments. Surprise me….share one of your stories.
