Motivational Speaker Giving a Shout Out to Don Cornelius

My sweetheart was the first white boy ever to dance on Soul Train (yup, the guy has moves), and he still cherishes being called “A blue-eyed soul brother” from the legend himself, Don Cornelius. The show launched in Chicago where we both grew up, and I can remember many an afternoon listening to Mr. Cornelius’ seductive soulful voice and doing my best to imitate some of the dances that weren’t showing up on American Bandstand. I had stopped watching by the time the show became a hit and moved to Los Angeles (you already know this if you ever saw me dance!), but I wanted to give a shout out to a man who opened my eyes to new, colorful experiences and artists through our black and white TV.

As a motivational speaker I love the power of words. Mr. Cornelius would say things like, “The hippest trip in America across the tracks of your mind.” Wow! Who knows exactly why he decided to end his life, but I thank him for what he brought to mine. A little more soul.

  1. Don’t you wish there was some way that people “out there” could know how much they impact us through the years? People like Don Cornelius and all those fabulous dancers. And I would do the same thing, Colette! Lock my bedroom door and do my best to get those moves down.
What a legend. He will live on.
