Motivational Speaker Gets a Surprising Upgrade

As a motivational speaker, I travel a LOT.  And while I can’t afford to fly first class, I often get upgraded because of my frequent flyer status.  So when a recent connecting flight in Atlanta got cancelled due to mechanical problems, I knew there wouldn’t be a chance of getting first class on the new plane (I hadn’t been booked in first on the flight that cancelled.)

I stood in the LONG line and watched as the  stressed out gate agent had to deal with rebooking every single irrate, unhappy, frustrated passenger who wanted to blame HER for the problem.   As I slowly made my way up to the front of the line, I noticed the agent got crankier and crankier as her customers got nastier and nastier.  So when I finally made it to the counter, without even looking up at me she said curtly, “Name.”

Instead of giving her my name, I leaned in to her and said, “This must be insanely stressful for you.  Whatever you are being paid, it’s not enough.”

She looked up at me and I swear, she almost started crying.  “Oh it IS stressful!  It REALLY is! I just don’t know if I can make it!”

I told her that she was doing a herculean job in the face of an impossible situation, and continued to talk as she rebooked me on the next flight.  When she handed me my new ticket I noticed that she had booked me in first class.  Surprised, I said, “Oh, I wasn’t booked in first class on the original flight.”  She looked back at me and with a little smile said, “You are now.”

While I did not choose to be kind and empathetic with her as a ploy to get something in return, it reinforced my belief that EVERYTHING we do or say, and the intention with which we do or say it will come back to us.  Sooner or later, it will come back.  This one just happened to be sooner – leaving a very surprised and happy traveler in its wake.
