Motivational Speaker Flies High

Womens-leadership-speaker-Colette-CarlsonNo, I’m currently not on drugs but referring to my most recent experience with a cancelled flight. Had the opportunity to practice what I was soon to be preaching to a few hundred women (Stress Less and Laugh More!). Here’s why. Having just walked out of the bathroom seconds before boarding my second leg of the journey (dueling combo of three hours to kill between flights coupled with a nearby Starbucks), the announcer shared the news: Flight Blah Blah Blah to Blah Blah is cancelled.

That’s when savvy travelers react faster than a jacked up jackrabbit jumping into line, jumping on smart phones and jumping to accurate conclusions they’ll be late.  Given my location, even the quickest of moves couldn’t land me near the front of the line, although I did manage to beat the first time travelers who were paralyzed with the news. And since it was a commuter terminal stuck out in Siberia, getting to a main terminal for more help wasn’t an option. Stress less, laugh more was quickly going to become stress more, laugh less if I didn’t take action and apply one of my key principles: Become an ASK Master!

Realizing the answer is always no if you don’t ask, I jumped out of line, approached the counter where Natalia was working the keyboard like a classical pianist. (Why does it seem like they have to type a dissertation to pull up flight information?)  With a big smile I said, “It’s not my style to cut in line, nor interrupt someone hard at work, but I’m speaking tonight in Eugene, OR to a few hundred women. They booked me months ago and it would mean the world to the meeting planner and to me personally if you could help me get there.” Natalia looked up at the woman already standing across from her and with a secret insider's smile and said, “Is she with you?” And the second, incredible woman I came to know as Janice said “Yes she is.” Natalia said, “Then you both are lucky as you just got the last two seats on any airline going to Eugene today.”

So the next time you’re stuck somewhere in the journey of life, take a risk and ask for someone’s help. You may just find yourself flying  high once more.

  1. See, Colette. That’s why I like you. As a motivational speaker, I hesitate to ask. Afraid to be impolite. Afraid to break out of the norm. I freeze and somebody else jumps in. Well no more. From now on, I’m going to think “What would Colette do?” and then I’m going to do it. Great post my friend.

  2. Rock on sister! My issue isn’t that I don’t always ask, it’s that I sometimes forget to ask in the kind loving thoughtful way that you did. Thanks for the reminder that INDEED it’s not only what you say- but how you say it that can make all the difference!
