Motivational speaker decides to get clean

My denial was broken.  I was loaded and really started to waver off course.  It’s not what you think though. What was my drug of choice? I was buzzed with frustration, anger, and resentment chased with a big ol’ chip on my shoulder and it was time to get clean.  Especially since I’m a motivational speaker!  Can you imagine? I had some challenges in 2011, no surprise there. I had a year like not other year I’ve ever had and it was starting to get me down.    I had lost my focus and it was time to get clean before I became that clown at kids parties who had a bit too much before performing.  And January is a perfect time to get clean. It really is an opportunity to start anew.  We have a new year to write on our checks (do people still write checks?) and with a new year comes a fresh, clean start.    So, I decided to get clean. Clean of regret, clean of resentment, clean of looking back.  Thank God I didn’t need to go to rehab for it!  I just needed to reach out, connect with some really positive people and get some help.  I didn’t even know I needed help – it was almost like a an intervention but without my family threatening to leave if I didn’t shape up.  I got honest with people who know me, who care about me, who gently told me it’s time to let go of things that were bringing me down.  I didn’t even realize that what I was focusing on actually contributed to my ‘can’t wait to forget about’ 2011.  And it worked.  Today, I am VERY excited to let go of what was holding me back and re-focus.  Time to let go of the addiction of self-pity and frustration. Right now is new.  Right now is the beginning of a fresh clean year and I am over the top excited about it!  I can make 2012 the best year ever.  Clean slate – full of possibilities.  The bonus gift was, as soon as I let go of last year and started to focus on the new year, I started connecting with more positive people filled with hope.  Just like when you buy a car, you start seeing that car everywhere?  Well, now I’m seeing articles, blogs, ideas that speak to having hope for a bright, big future.  Just this morning I came across a poem by Thomas Dyer:

When we look at where we’ve been, and things we’ve done, and sights we’ve seen and wish we were more fit and lean, Look Forward! Look Forward! The future’s never set in stone, and you’re not going there alone! Enjoy your life, don’t gripe and groan; You choose each moment, make it your own.

So today, I’m psyched because I’ve decided that I love being clean.    It’s January and I’m high on the possibilities in front of me and I’m really really excited about it!

  1. You go girl! And remember that motivation is not a one-time fix, but a process. If you’re like me, you’ll feel great today, and probably tomorrow – and then somewhere along the way those nasty old feelings come back. At least they do for me. And I acknowledge it, and let it go again. I think it was Zig Ziglar, the motivational speaker of motivational speakers, who was once told that motivation doesn’t last – to which he replied, “You are right. That’s why you have to do it every day!” Congratulations, Marilyn, for coming clean. It’s going to be a great year – I just feel it!

  2. Congratulations Marilyn on letting go and taking charge of your shiny new future! Thanks for the great reminder!!! I wish you much magic on your journey:) xt

  3. Wow! Love you speaking your truth. Although not necessarily labeled a motivational speaker, a quote from Dr Phil: “Stand up and walk out of your history.” Sounds like you’re running. And we all can.

  4. Great quote Colette – Stand up and walk out of your history. Sometimes I feel like my history runs faster than I can. And I would call Dr. Phil a motivational speaker for sure. And quite an effective one!
