Motivational Speaker Asks “Where Do You Go To Fill Back Up?”

As a motivational speaker, I meet a lot of people who are running on empty – who live in a constant state of burn out – who are one spilled-coffee-in-the-lap-on-the-way-to-work away from losing it. And there are some people who are carrying around such heavy burdens, that they are about to snap. While I understand that there is a lot in life that we can’t control – and it may seem sometimes that we don’t have a lot of choices – it is imperative that we tend to ourselves too. Just like they tell you on the airplane to put the mask on your own face before you turn to your child, it is important that every once in a while, you fill back up.

So hear me if you are running on empty: Stop. Take some time for yourself. You are going to be no good to others, if you have nothing left to give. And if you don’t stop, your body will stop you.

It is not weak to stop and do something for yourself – to recharge your batteries – to center yourself – to get focused.

And so now I ask, “Where do you go to fill back up?” Do you retreat to a closet with a box of Oreos? Do you sit in the parking lot of your kid’s school and cry? Do you count sleep as your chance to fill back up? Are you giving yourself a proper charging?

Even if it’s just thirty minutes in the bath tub with a good book – a glass of wine and a magazine – an aerobics class – or a day of painting in the garage – find what fills you back up. And then do it. Schedule it, or you’ll never get around to it. You’ll be happier and so will the other people in your life. It’s amazing what you can handle when you are centered at your core.

Next question: Where do you go to find your truth?
