My friend, colleague and the brilliantly funny motivational speaker, Kelly Swanson, wrote a fabulous blog post about her Journey to a Healthier Ever After. In it she shared something she is going through right now in terms of her health. It is extremely truthful, insightful and offers a clear vision of how to achieve any goal. And that vision is revealed…through HER experience as a person, a woman and a professional motivational speaker. I called her a Professional Experiencer.
And that got me to thinking about a term I have frequently used to describe what I do as a motivational speaker. I like to say that I am a Professional Pothole Lighter. Let me explain.
Metaphorically, I see myself on a dark night walking single file on a narrow path through the woods. I envision a lot of people in front of me, and some behind me. There is a lighted lantern attached to my belt in the back, that hangs down below my butt and is swinging back and forth as I walk along. The PURPOSE of this lantern is to illuminate the path for the people behind me, so that if I fall into a pothole, they will see that and know where NOT to step. Hence the term, Professional Pothole Lighter.
If you could give yourself any title in life (personally or professionally), what would it be? What fun phrase would pretty much say it for you? I once saw a person's professional creditials after their name listed as Sally Smith, CEO (Chief Encouraging Officer).
So go ahead! Give yourself a title! And while you're at it, why not give youself a raise. You've earned it.
