Life Lessons in the Hot Room

Life lessons learned in the hot room

Motivational speaker Marilyn Sherman learns life lessons from Hot Pilates instructor

Last year I decided to up my physical workouts by joining a hot yoga studio that offered classes in a hot room (around 100-105 degrees).  Each of the classes I took were intimidating because EVERYONE was thinner, more toned, more flexible and more talented in the hot room than I was.  But, I continued going and now, I proudly go to the front-row (no surprise there) and just do my ‘practice’ as it is called in the hot room.  There are life lessons that I’ve heard from my instructors that are applicable in all areas of life! Here’s what my hot hot Pilates instructor (she is hot!) says to people coming to the class for the first time:

1. If you are new, feel free to take a knee.

The hot room takes some getting used to.  The goal is to stay in the room the whole time, so if you are getting fatigued, feel free to take a knee and then re-engage when you have caught your breath.  Life doesn’t always go as planned so when we get fatigued in any task, don’t throw in the towel or give up.  Just, take a knee, regroup then re-engage.

2. The room is hot, and it will get hotter.

I love how our instructor tells us the way it is.  No sugar coating here.  Life is hard and at times, it will get harder.  But, we’re all in this together and we can get through it.

3. This is your practice. You can make it as hard or as easy as you want.

No one is going to tell you how well you did or how you could have worked harder.  Only you know how much effort you are putting into things, and only you can feel pride or disappointment.  It’s up to you.

And finally, my favorite:

4. No judgement in the hot room!

When I was new to the hot room, I couldn’t help but feel intimidated exercising next to Cirque de Soleil performers working out on their days off. I thought all eyes were on me as I tried unsuccessfully to do certain moves.  But over and over I heard ‘No judgment in the hot room!’ Finally I realized that no one was looking at how fat I was or how inflexible I was.  And sometime during the last 10 months, the meaning shifted for me.  I no longer was judging myself.  Gone was the shame of how I had let myself go, and gone was the guilt of what I did to myself to get me to the point of needing a serious workout makeover!  Now, I focus on 60 minutes of work in a fun, music filled hot room!

Here’s to finding lessons wherever we go in life.

  1. LOVE this post Marilyn! For months I have been thinking that you are taking classes from a hot instructor. Only now do I see that you meant the room was hot. How funny. But the instructor is hot too – so there you go.

  2. GREAT post, Marilyn!  And the evidence of how great it is? Well, I want to go find one of these classes where I live and start taking it!  And ALL the lessons you shared are PERFECT for real life!  Thanks!

  3. Yay Marilyn!!  Great post and great growth for you in that hot room!

  4. May we all carry that no judgement zone outside of the hot room! Congrats on your continued motivation and success in the direction of your goals and dreams.
