Larsen’s Words that Work: “You have plenty of room…”

While it would be more effective if people would be clear and truthful in their communication, the fact is that there are people you know who might say “yes” to a request of yours when they would prefer to say “no.”  And you and I know what complications can ensue when that happens.  Resentment, frustration, substandard effort…

If you suspect a person might have a hard time saying “no” to you, try using this phrase:  “I have a request, Bob, and I need you to know that you have plenty of room to decline.”

It could open the door just enough for a person to actually, well, be truthful with you!

And here’s an important part:  Pay attention to their non-verbal communication.  Do they APPEAR hesistant?  If you see anything that looks like they are reluctant to tell you the truth, then say something like, “Hold on, Bob, I may be wrong, but I get the feeling that you have some reservation. I am very sincere when I say that you have plenty of room to decline my request.”

I would rather get a “no” to my request, and preserve our relationship, than to get a “yes” and compromise it.

  1. I love this phraseology! I too would much rather get a no than to ruin a relationship.  I’ve never heard it quite the way you are putting it and it’s great and I can’t wait to use it!

  2. So many fantastic words and phrases that you are deciphering for us Linda!  Thank you!  I think I’m going to keep a little notepad of Linda-isms and learn them as my second language to help thwart dementia!
