You may be wearing a sign that says 'Closed for Restoration' and not event know it. I thought about this while vacationing in Rome. Today, I couldn't help but notice that a major tourist site was under some restoration. They were updating, renovating, restoring the façade of the famous Roman Coliseum. However, there were masses of tourists from all over the world enjoying the beauty, the history, the story of the place.
I got to thinking of the restoration and renovation of me and many other women like me. You know what I'm talking about – the nipping, the tucking, the crunching, the coloring! Yet, we still go on doing our job as if we are still open for business. That's the good news! The challenge is, many people hold off on doing what they want – chasing their dream because they are waiting until they look a certain way, or have accumulated enough education, or feel 'ready' to go on. Can you imagine a sign out front of the Coliseum saying "Closed for Renovation"?
For me as a motivational speaker, I'm constantly trying to take my craft – my coliseam – and renovating it to be better and better. Not to mention the fact that I have to work on my façade quite a bit! I seem to be consistenlty inconsistent with things I need to work on. And, there is a lot to work on! But, it doesn't stop me from going on stage. I know that during the work in progress, I am of value to my audiences, I am still open during the renovation!
So take down that sign that says closed for rennovation. Be open to sharing your value just as you are today. The masses didn't mind a little scaffolding at the Coliseum, we all still appreciated it. Don't wait until you are a certain way before you go for that promotion, special project, or dream you've always wanted to persue.
After all, the rennovations and restorations will probably continue on for a lifetime!
