I Feel Like Such A Ninnyhammer

As a motivational speaker, I love words. I just love them. They carry such emotion sometimes, don’t they? And while we often think we HAVE an emotion, and then we identify it with a word, sometimes emotions are actually CREATED by the word – or at the very least they are intensified by it.

Dr. Norman Cousins, author of Anatomy of An Illness once wrote, “Words can kill. When a patient was diagnosed and had an actual word to define his symptoms, he got sicker. Words like ‘cancer,’ ‘Parkinsons’s disease,’ and ‘heart disease’ tended to induce extreme fear and panic in patients. Those feelings then began to undermine their body’s immune systems.”

So here’s my suggestion: The next time you do something that…um…you wish you hadn’t done, instead of berating yourself with things like, “You stupid idiot!!” – try instead using some FUN word like….NINNYHAMMER.  And by all means, use the word right out loud!

I promise you – when you even hear yourself say that word, instead of feeling MORE like an idiot – you’ll want to laugh.  I promise, you will.  You little ninnyhammer, you.

From your fellow ninnyhammer and motivational speaker, Linda Larsen, who remembers the word from her Lord of the Rings Trilogy – Volume 3 if you must know.

P.S.  I have no idea why I used that photo – except that it made me laugh. It COULD be a ninnyhammer…
