How Tabloids Help Me Get Business

magazinecoverWhen you're a motivational speaker, it's important to be able to connect to your market. You have to know who your best audience is, what challenges they face, and what they want out of life. You have to know more than what they want – you have to know the language they speak in their head. Are they asking for a happy marriage, or are they asking to deal with a husband who cheats? Are they wanting a rich full life, or are they wishing they knew better how to save for retirement?  Your success in selling your brand and your programs as a speaker, will depend on your ability to speak their language. So how do we figure out what they want?

One of the fastest ways to figure this out, is to look at magazine covers. Magazines spend billions of dollars studying their market and coming up with attractive articles and power statements that get our attention and get us to buy. So learn from them. Find the magazine that sells to your market, and read the articles titles. You'll learn really quick what matters to your audience. Use their language, and benefit from their big budget marketing,

  1. Oooh. Good point. They do the research. They find out what the issues and probelms are. And they are in the business of providing solutions to people's problems. Great resource to consider! Thanks Kelly!

  2. This is such great advice, Kelly!  You helped me with this when I was posting twice a week on the Facebook page of an upcoming women's event where I was speaking.  It was such fun to use headliners like "Banish Your Muffin Top" and "Ten Top Tips for a Lean Mean Body"!  Like you say, these magazines have already spent the bazillions on the research.  Brilliant!

  3. Rock solid advice. Now when I read those titles in the grocery line, this motivational speaker will be doing research, rather than simply being nosy!

  4. I had never thought of this idea Kelly!  Good job.  No wonder you are so brilliant when it comes to connecting with your audiences.  Bravo!
