How Do You Measure Success?

As a motivational speaker, I am often guilty of measuring my success in dollars. I say I don’t, but then I turn around and wonder why she got the bigger job, or why I don’t make as much as he does, does that mean I’m not as good? I tell my audiences all the time to stay in touch with how what they do affects their community in ways they can never see. I teach them how to motivate themselves by seeing beyond the dollars or the job description. Today I took a dose of my own medicine. I received flowers from someone in my audience. Not the client, not the meeting planner – just someone who took my words to heart – who said that my presence changed her life. Wow. Every time I walk past those flowers I am reminded that what I do matters in ways that can’t be counted in dollars. I hope you feel the same about what you do and the difference you make. I hope you aren’t measuring your success in dollars and cents. You are worth so much more than that.

  1. And as one of the people who has sat in your audience I can say unequivocally that the value you gave ME was priceless. I wish I had sent flowers.

  2. Kelly, I’m not surprised that someone felt compelled to send you that beautiful arrangement as you are one inspirational, motivational speaker who makes others feel powerful and complete just the way they are. Yes we all need coin to pay the bills and success to me has always been healthy, loving relationships, laughter and a way of providing service to others that brings you joy!

  3. What a great message.  It’s hard to do – I’m in that same boat comparing my fee to others – so it was nice to hear about not measuring my success by dollars.  I’m with Linda – I wish I would have sent you flowers!!!
