Healthy Lifestyle Habits for the Evening Hours

“I eat really well all day long but then I blow it at night!”  If I had a dime for every time I’ve heard that confession, well, I’d be blogging from my private jet on my way to my private island right now!  If truth be told, I’d have funded half the cost of that plane.  As a motivational speaker on health and wellness I completely understand the challenges of switching to healthier habits after decades of unhealthy lifestyles.  It is very hard.  But we must keep trying to improve our health for the sake of a good quality of life as we age.  Here are some of the routines I’ve created for the evening hours to keep me from sabotaging my days’ worth of healthy eating and exercising:

1.  Eat 1 piece of fruit while making dinner

2.  Cover 1/2 your plate with vegetables

3.  Measure 1 Tablespoon of dressing on salad (2 tablespoons if it’s a large main meal salad)

4.  Make the meal last 20 minutes

5.  No second helpings

6.  Go for a walk (weather permitting)

7.  Steaming hot cup of decaffeinated green tea (or 2)

8.  Handful of raw almonds or walnuts and dark chocolate chips (equal parts)

9.  OR 1 single fudgesicle OR 4oz. real fruit sorbet

10. Go to bed early enough to get at least 7 hours of sleep

As with any new routine, start with one challenge at a time until it’s comfortable and then move on to the next challenge.  Just think, 5 nights of this behavior will allow you to go “a little crazy” on 2 of the nights!  Life’s a balance.  This works for me and I hope it helps you extend your healthy daytime habits into your evening hours!

  2. The world needs motivational speakers who not only inspire, but provide great tips like you, Polly. After dinner I have to immediately brush and floss my teeth. Since I’m not motivated to repeat later, it stops me from reaching for that nummy popcorn or cookie those around me might be eating.
