Gobsmacked Again

Hi. It’s me again. Your word loving motivational speakerAnd this time I come to you with one of my all time favorites: Gobsmacked.

Before I go any further, I’d like you to please say that word right out loud….  Go on, no one’s watching. Say it right out loud.

Did you notice how it makes you really contort your mouth around? That’s fun, isn’t it?  And did you hear out it sounds? Gobsmacked. It’s FUNNY! It’s a funny word!

Oh there’s plenty of other words you could use. Words like “stunned,” “shocked,” “appalled.”  But they just aren’t as…colorful or lively or fun.

Try these on…

“You’re going to be late again? Why I’m downright GOBSMACKED!”
“You promised you’d do your homework but you haven’t done it! I’m gobsmacked!”
“We actually WON the game? We did??? Well, just call me gobsmacked!!!

Can you even imagine how people would respond if you used this word?  Why, they’d be _________. You fill in the blank.

  1. I love hitting people with unexpected words.  The other day I met someone who asked me how I was.  I responded with ‘Fabulous’. He then said, ‘Wonderful’ and we went back and forth: ‘Stunning!’ ‘Amazing!’ ‘Delightful!’ We eventually ran out of fun words to use – and trust me, we were no where near ‘fine’.  It put a smile on both of our faces….in fact I would say we were gobsmacked!

  2. So fun, Linda! I have to say I’ve personally never used the term “Gobsmacked”but the one time someone I know as an acquaintance used it, I was well, …. gobsmacked! Thanks for a great word and wonderful reminder of the beauty of words. I’m going to try it on my teenage daughters and report back.

  3. Will and I went to the Avengers movie last night, and he sat there gobsmacked the whole time. Terrific word. One of the fun things about words is that they all have a texture, shape, and ‘tangibleness’. You’re the motivational speaker with the communication chops.
