Move over medicine cabinet. Make room for the natural remedies of foods. As a healthy motivational speaker (knock on wood, so far no colds or flu) I prefer to give these natural remedies a chance before child-proof-wrestling my way into a bottle of pills. This one works everytime. If you find yourself suffering from a nagging cough or sore throat:
Honey to the rescue! What other sweet treat can tout itself as having antibacterial and antioxidant properties? These help in soothing a sore throat or a hack-attack. Stir two teaspoons into warm water or herbal tea and sip a cup every two to three hours as needed. Some studies suggest that the darker varieties, like buckwheat, may have the strongest antibacterial properties.
Other ways to dose yourself: Mix into unsweetened yogurt, salad dressings and smoothies. Use in baked goods, drizzle over roasted vegetables. I like to think I am using it as a preventive measure during cold season by sweetening my tea with 1 teaspoon daily. Just call me Winnie The Pooh!
