Food As Medicine: Cough

honeyMove over medicine cabinet.  Make room for the natural remedies of foods.  As a healthy motivational speaker (knock on wood, so far no colds or flu) I prefer to give these natural remedies a chance before child-proof-wrestling my way into a bottle of pills. This one works everytime. If you find yourself suffering from a nagging cough or sore throat:

Honey to the rescue!  What other sweet treat can tout itself as having antibacterial and antioxidant properties?  These help in soothing a sore throat or a hack-attack.  Stir two teaspoons into warm water or herbal tea and sip a cup every two to three hours as needed.  Some studies suggest that the darker varieties, like buckwheat, may have the strongest antibacterial properties.

Other ways to dose yourself:  Mix into unsweetened yogurt, salad dressings and smoothies.  Use in baked goods, drizzle over roasted vegetables.  I like to think I am using it as a preventive measure during cold season by sweetening my tea with 1 teaspoon daily.  Just call me Winnie The Pooh!

Motivational Speaker Polly Pitchford didn’t always know the phytochemical benefits of kale, in fact, those words weren’t even in her vocabulary 30 years ago. Neither did she see any reason to do jumping jacks on a cement surface for an hour. But all it took was a chance vegetarian cooking class and some high-energy music to open her eyes upon a whole new world of healthy living. For 30 years Polly has practiced, studied, taught, educated and lived a healthy lifestyle that makes her such a powerful speaker.

Polly’s down-to-Earth and humorous approach mirrors her own lifelong journey to lasting, positive changes. The audience walks away with tangible plans for improving their health and their lives through food, fitness and fun.

  1. There is no one on the planet who can use this information more than motivational speakers, Polly! About the LAST thing we need to have happen (and I HAVE had it happen) is to have to go on stage and be plagued by a cough.  Okay so I'll get those little straws with honey in them and pack them in my suitcase! Thanks soooooo much for this one!

  2. Linda's right – we as motivational speakers can NOT afford to be sick!  In twenty years of full time speaking, I am VERY grateful that I've only missed one event due to sickness.  Keep those remedies coming Polly!

  3. No wonder Bill has been shoving honey down my throat for weeks! He will be so glad to hear that he has been right. :)

  4. Hello Winnie! Thanks for sharing yet another great way to stay healthy as motivational speakers. I didn't even know there was a buckwheat honey, so again, appreciate your great info.
