Decisions Decisions Decisions

Decisions-motivaitonal-speakersEveryone is sometimes faced with making tough decisions regardless of who you are or what you do for a living. Plumbers, moms & dads, bankers, motivational speakers and tight rope walkers – we ALL have had moments where we feel like a deer caught in the headlights. And how do you choose between cars speeding toward you from both directions?

This morning on one of the Sunday morning talk shows I heard Rep. Mike Rogers Chair of the US Intelligence Committee say that sometimes the only choice you have is the best of the worst outcomes.

The best of the worst outcomes.

That really made me stop and think. I realized that sometimes the reason why I freeze and take no action is that I am looking for the perfect solution or the one that will leave me feeling happy and wonderful at the end.  And the fact is that there just may not BE a choice that leads to that outcome.

This is not to say that I won't look for possible solutions and creative possibilities within any problem, but in the end, I might just need to also consider choosing the best of the worst outcomes.

  1. Linda, I can so relate as I've always wanted to make the "right" decision, and you just reminded me to make the decision that is best for right now taking everyting into account. When I worked for Brian Tracy he used to encourage us to make a choice. If it didn't work out, make another choice. It's wonderful having so many motivational speakers in my life to onsistently encourage me to take action.

  2. So true. Life isn't as clear cut as choosing the path with the right answer.  Our country is in a really tough position. The truth is that we are 16 trillion dollars in debt (I think that's the number – whatever it is, it is unacceptable). The answer is to get rid of that debt – as I'm sure any of us running a household would agree that if you are living beyond your means, and spending wildly, you have to stop. The problem is that there are many ways to cut this debt – and most of them will sting somebody. We truly are in a situation where we have to choose something. If we choose nothing, then we all lose. In a big way.

    • So true Kelly. And he wasn't even talking about the budget. But now that you mention it, yes, there are a whole lot of ways to cut the debt to balance a budget. AND, I respectfully submit, that one could also increase revenues and balance that same budget.  Not one or the other – but both.  Again, respectfully suggested, with love and admiration and alacrity and aplomb and a partridge in a pear tree.

  3. I didn't figure he was talking about the budget – that just popped into my mind as a great example of what you are talking about. No matter what road we take to getting out of debt, it's going to sting somebody. Raising taxes will sting. Cutting budgets will sting – no matter what budget gets cut – somebody won't be happy about it. There will not be an answer that doesn't sting. We're just in a position where we have to choose the best of the worst. Great discussion!
