My kids have groaned for years as I insist meals together are a No Cell Phone Zone. If I didn’t enforce this dinner table rule they’d be texting one another to pass the butter! Plus, they wouldn’t be sharing their latest antics, annoying teachers, nor have the opportunity to listen to me drone on about some unimportant fact they don’t need to know. Or so they think!

When I dine with others I’m often the one who is willing to speak my truth and say, “Is it cool with everyone if we put our phones away while we’re together?” Nothing irks me more than when I’m put on hold every few minutes while someone responds to non-emergency issues. Don’t get me wrong, I love the convenience of our phones and don’t want to live without mine. Yet, there is a time and a place …unless of course you are an emergency room doctor or you’ve left the kids home alone to grab a bite of sanity.

GREAT post, Colette!  Can we publish this one in the New York Times, please?  AND – if I am totally honest – I know I have been guilty of glancing down at my phone in my lap while in the company of others.  Heck, now that I think about it, if I’m the first one in the restaurant to, let’s say, meet a girlfriend for lunch, I know I will do “work” on my phone until she arrives. And when she does – how many times do I just lay my phone down on the table as I see her arrive???  Well, thanks to your reminder here, I’m going to stop that practice immediately!  I thank you – and my friends and family thank you.

What a great idea to offer 5% discount for phones to be left at the door!  There is nothing more annoying than overhearing another guests’ phone conversation while you are trying to enjoy a nice dinner.  Now, if we can only get our audience members to stop texting while we are delivering our motivational messages!  Unless of course they are texting their friends and colleagues to come into our session because it’s so awesome!!!
