In a heartfelt New York Times op-ed piece yesterday, Angelina Jolie shared her decision to have a double mastectomy. It’s funny that as she’s taking the opportunity to be so raw and vulnerable, with a goal of bringing awareness, information and options to others, some will still say, it’s TMI. Sadly, some mean-spirited individuals will inevitably accuse her of using this to garner attention.
However, I say it’s a beautiful example of speaking your truth. By sharing her personal medical choice, she’s not sharing others’ truths. Rather, she writes compellingly about why this was the right decision for her and her family. In speaking her truth, she’s not maligning anyone else’s choices.
Can you imagine a world where, when one person speaks their truth, others simply hear the message without judgment? Ultimately, it doesn’t matter, though, because it’s not about what others think. It’s about what you think and what you’re comfortable sharing with others. Speak your truth.
