Bravo to Angelina Jolie for Speaking Her Truth

Angelina Jolie speaks her truthIn a heartfelt New York Times op-ed piece yesterday, Angelina Jolie shared her decision to have a double mastectomy. It’s funny that as she’s taking the opportunity to be so raw and vulnerable, with a goal of bringing awareness, information and options to others, some will still say, it’s TMI. Sadly, some mean-spirited individuals will inevitably accuse her of using this to garner attention.

However, I say it’s a beautiful example of speaking your truth. By sharing her personal medical choice, she’s not sharing others’ truths. Rather, she writes compellingly about why this was the right decision for her and her family. In speaking her truth, she’s not maligning anyone else’s choices.

Can you imagine a world where, when one person speaks their truth, others simply hear the message without judgment? Ultimately, it doesn’t matter, though, because it’s not about what others think. It’s about what you think and what you’re comfortable sharing with others. Speak your truth.

  1. Brave.  Good for her.  And, bummer that people will make a big deal out of 'controversy' saying she was just trying to get more attention.  I think it's great, especially when she said the odds of getting cancer went from 80% to less than 10% or something.  Made perfectly good sense to me.  Kudos for strong women speaking their truth!

  2. This is a very brave example of speaking your truth.  I think it will help those struggling with this issue to open up with their families, their doctors and themselves.

  3. Amen! And also what a beautiful message Angelina gave that empowers women to choose health over body image.

  4. Oh yes, Colette, there is a very powerful message in this for us all. As motivational speakers this is an imperative, right? We MUST share our truth with the world, if nothing else, as an example of how powerful the process can be.  We make it okay for others to say, "I have to choose what's right for me. If you agree, fine. If you don't agree, that's okay too. It's what I am doing because it's the right choice for me." Thanks for holding up this great example.
