Beware of Faux-thenticity

Faux-thentic

You have heard or read it somewhere by now…  Be real.  Let your True Self show.  And the ubiquitous, Be Authentic!

This is the marketing cry around every corner – the message is, if you are too packaged and polished you will not engage the client and will fail to be successful.  I actually LOVE the truth behind this trend, what bothers me is how it has been twisted, like many other trends, to accommodate the masses.

Recently, I watched a slick and slim professional preach about how it is crucial to success that you connect with your client.  She then gave a point-by-point method of how to appear authentic to your clients, complete with how you should stand, how you should sound and how to hold your head!

I’m sorry, but to me that is the exact opposite of authentic –  It is Faux-thentic!

Don’t worry about how you stand, or how you hold your head, or what you weigh, or what you wear, or even the precise words you use.  Authenticity is not an outfit or a tone or a light touch on the arm.

LISTEN to the person talking.  Then listen to your own heart.  Finally listen to your instinct.    Now speak from there.  That is what authenticity looks like!

For real.

  1. I kind of wanted to cry when I read this post of yours, Tami. It's just outstanding advice from a VERY authentic motivational speaker who definitely walks her talk.  Girl, you are one talented writer – but more importantly, you are a wise, wise woman.  Tell me things. I'll listen.

  2. And that's what YOU look like Miss Tami!  I agree with Linda that you are an amazing talent when it comes to writing.  It's part of your amazing motivational speaker persona!

  3. Ditto.Ditto. And, you know I resonate with this blog. Keep speaking your truth, Tami. It's powerful AND motivating!

  4. Amen! You are spot on! People buy from people they like. And they won't like you unless they feel like they know you. I watched a woman give a speech on authenticity (of all things) and I swear she looked like a mannequin. I am convinced we weren't seeing the real her. That's what I love about all you ladies. You let the real self out on stage. That's why audiences love you!

  5. I can't believe there are people who are training how to be authentic!  Too funny.  I am with Kelly and the rest of the great bloggers here – I was just talking about the 'mannequin' who was speaking on authenticity.  It's actually so much more freeing to just be yourself!  And all of you bloggers here exemplify that in spades and that's why I love you!
