Be Memorable

Tami Evans, Be Memorable

The plane has risen smoothly into the air, and I am firing up “April” my laptop, to get to work on my flight to Chicago.

“Good afternoon Ms Evans, may I get you a beverage?”  I am surprised to hear my name and look up into the smiling face of Judy, our flight attendant.  “Um… seltzer, no ice, please.” I stammer.

As Judy hands me my drink, she looks into my eyes and says “It is such a pleasure having you on board” and she MEANS it!

After she is finished serving the rest of the plane BY NAME and telling each person how nice it is to have them on the flight, I have to find out a little more about this over-and-above woman. “Oh, the name thing is something I have been doing for years.  We have the list of passenger names, and I have met so many interesting people this way.”

As a motivational speaker on soft skills, I am delighted with this woman and the positive impact she is making in the lives of so many.

If you are ever lucky enough to be on a flight hosted by Judy, you will feel the magnitude of her oh-so-simple act of engaging.   No additional time, money or technology needed – Just the simple power of human connection.

  1. Wow, Tami, how great that you shared your experience with us so that we could be reminded of how little it takes to make customers REALLY happy. And it doesn't take a motivational speaker on customer service to see that THIS is what makes a company successful. Something this seemingly simple, easy, and as you point out – NO COST – can make such a huge difference. It can make people sing your praises to anyone who will listen and refer you to everyone they know.  Thanks for the reminder, Tami!

  2. Right on Tami! Funny how easy it is to go that extra step – and yet so many don't do it! Awesome post.

  3. How special Judy made so many feel by choosing to call them by name. Thanks, Tami, for sharing such a beautiful story from the sky.

  4. I TRY to be Judy in my exercise classes but I don't have a seating chart!  So instead, I go up and chat with several people before class and commit to remember just ONE of their names for next time.  It feels so nice to have someone call you by name when you think you are just one of the masses.  Yay to Judy and yay to you for reminding us to take that extra step!
