Are We Having Fun Yet?

My friend and colleague, the brilliant motivational speaker, Colette Carlson wrote a wonderful blog entitled, No, We Are Not There Yet! on how important vacations are and how reluctant we frequently are to actually TAKE those vacations.

And that reminded me of a vacation that I took with my husband the year before we got married. One that I remember like it was YESTERDAY!

It was our very first trip together and John had been saying for weeks how much fun we were going to have and how great it was going to be.  Over and over I heard, “I can’t WAIT to go on vacation with you!” Even as we were driving to the airport in Tampa he kept saying, “We are going to have so much fun on this vacation!”

When we got to the counter to check in, we were informed that our plane had been cancelled and the next flight out was going to put us into Albuquerque too late to pick up the rental car that night.  It was clear we were going to need to get on the phone and make some new arrangements.

As we there we stood in that hideously long line waiting to rebook our flight, I could see that John was not the only one visibly upset.  But it was when he said, with great frustration, “At this rate we will NEVER start our vacation!” that it hit me exactly what needed to happen.

I said to him, “Hey John, aren’t we actually on vacation right now? You aren’t at work, I’m not at work, and we have no responsibilities AT ALL!  We ARE ON vacation! What if we said that starting right now, we are having a BLAST! Regardless of what happens to us!  Because after all, those work people can’t get us!!!”

His eyes widened as this HUGE smile broke out across his face and he replied, “Oh my gosh! You are so right!” Let’s PARTY!!!”

And with that, for some unknown reason, we started singing “It’s a Small World After All” – like we were two 5 year olds at Disney World.  And people scowled and shot dirty looks at us – until they didn’t.  Until they slowly started grinning, and then smiling and then singing along with us.  It was BRILLIANT!!!  People at other counters were looking at this huge long line of people singing and having….dare I say it….FUN!!!!

Moral of the story:  You are having fun, the moment you say you are having fun.
