Allow Me To Bragg?

     Bragg Liquid Aminos.  Have you ever heard of it?  This liquid seasoning has been this motivational speakers’ pantry staple for 30 years and I keep forgetting to tell you about it!  Whether your goal is to shed a few pounds, cut down on sodium, break free of a seasoning rut or get a child to eat his/her vegetables, Bragg Liquid Aminos can assist you.

Braggs is a vegetable protein (liquid) seasoning made from soybeans.  That’s where the name Aminos comes from, because the soybean has the 16 amino acids of a complete protein for the body to use to build muscle and all its other tissues.  Its taste is a cross between a light soy sauce and a rich vegetable broth.   With that kind of flavor profile I like to use it on my cooked green vegetables and as an addition to soup stock.  It’s also heavenly on baked white or sweet potatoes instead of salt!

Speaking of salt, here are the facts and comparisons:

  • ½ teaspoon table salt = 1200 mg. sodium
  • ½ teaspoon of Braggs = 160 mg. sodium
  • ½ teaspoon of Soy Sauce = 250 mg. sodium
  • ½ teaspoon Low Sodium Tamari (good quality soy sauce) = 118 mg. sodium

Even though the last product is lower in sodium, I think it has such an unmistakable “Pass the egg rolls” taste that I don’t like to use it in the same ways as I use the Liquid Aminos, which has a more neutral flavor and lends itself to more than Chinese foods.

How to use it?  Here are some of the many easy ways:

  • As a soup stock. (1/2 cup Braggs per 4 cups water), especially bean soups!
  • As a marinade (add garlic, hot sauce, herbs) for seafood, pork, chicken or tofu
  • As seasoning for steamed or sautéed vegetables (squirt)
  • As a base for sauces and gravies
  • In salad dressings instead of salt
  • Stir-Frys (of course)
  • Popcorn!

Bragging About Baby Bok Choy

Cut baby bok choy in half lengthwise.  Rinse between the leaves.  Heat 1/8” of water in a pan to simmering.  Add bok choy, cut side down, and cover with lid.  Cook for 2 minutes.  Remove lid and simmer until water is almost gone.  Squirt @ 2 Teaspoons of Bragg Liquid Aminos over Bok Choy and cook 30 seconds more.  Remove to serving plate.  Grind of pepper if you like.

Simple, clean taste and simply delicious.  Enjoy!

Thanks Polly – Frenchie uses it all the time for cooking.  He makes great sauces with it, with fat free sour cream and puts it on salmon or chicken.  Yummo!  We get it at Whole Foods – they don’t carry it in our local grocery store.  They looked at us like puppies staring at the light when we asked for it a the grocery store!
