AH HA! How to Have an Epiphany!

I may be a motivational speaker  by profession, but I sometimes think my biggest job is simply to share how I falter, fumble and mess up.  Let me explain.

When I got to Church this morning, I did what I always do.  I headed toward the section where I always sit, hoping for the seat in which I always sit, next to the people that are always there.  On the way I saw a really good friend on the OTHER side of the auditorium, who smiled, waved and pointed to the empty seat next to her.

I panicked!  My brain started scrambling, “Oh no! I can’t sit THERE! I won’t be on ‘my’ side of the room! I don’t know the people over there. What if there is a big head in front of me here? Or big hair?”

There it was again – that darned gravitational pull.  Dragging me back to what I have always done.  Not for any good reason other than, this is what I’ve always done therefore I should keep doing it.

I took a deep breath and sat next to my friend.  I told her about this little epiphany I just had and she astutely replied, “Oh, so you’re getting a new PERSPECTIVE over here then, aren’t you?”

Wow!  That’s exactly what I was doing!  Literally AND metaphorically!  And in that moment, I made the decision to sit in a different seat in a different area of the Church every single Sunday.

So here’s another one of those motivational speaker challenges for you.  Why not, for this day or this week, just pick one little thing to do that pulls you out of your comfort zone so that you can get a different perspective on things?  You might be surprised at what you find.  AND – I’D LOVE for you to hit “reply” and put in WRITING what you are going to do differently!  Nothing like posting your commitment for all the world to see!

Oh, and get this.  When Reverend David started the service, he put up a powerpoint slide announcing the title of his message which was:  AH HA! How to Have an Epiphany!

You gotta love it.

  1. Love this assignment from one of my favorite motivational speakers, Linda Larsen! I’m going to try each day to do one small thing that is out of my comfort zone. That’s a big task for me, since I live most of my life outside my comfort zone. But still. I will try.

I also have one other thing I’m going to try – something I learned at an awesome women’s conference I was a part of this weekend. Every day I’m going to ask God to show me one place/moment/person who needs a little bit of my time, my energy, or my money. And I’m going to ask God to give me the courage to act on it. And at the end of a year, I will know that 365 people will have been touched by God because I listened, and I obeyed. And I will be better at hearing God when He whispers.

    • Wow, Kelly, I LOVE your idea! I really do think that as motivational speakers, our job is to share ideas just like this one! I also love the fact that we have a community where we can regularly share great ideas on how to live our best lives. AND, when we are funny motivational speakers – well, that adds one more element to people’s ability to get this info, enjoy and actually want to use it!

  2. You earned the motivational speaker of the week award, Linda! I needed to be challenged in this exact way and your story has inspired me to get out of my comfort zone by asking more questions and speaking what’s on my mind. I tend to sit back with a “Que sera, sera” attitude! Thanks for the push!
