A Coffee Nap is Not an Oxymoron

And, after a long night, I’ve been known to reach for a jolt of caffeine in the afternoon rather than a heathier choice – a short nap. Can you relate? But what if I told you that you could up your energy and productivity by doing both? That’s right, scientists have discovered that quickly drinking a cup of coffee then lying down for 20 minutes actually boosts your alertness levels. Two caveats – you’ve got to drink the coffee quickly – iced coffee or an espresso might be a good option if chugging hot coffee repulses you. Second, even if you’re unable to nod off, you still need to rest and attempt to sleep, but just for 20 minutes.

Imagine if this technique caught on. In addition to people tapping away on their laptops, they might be napping away on the table at a local Starbucks. Feeling sleepy? Chug a mug of the drug and be a 20-minute slug.

  1. Oh how I LOVE this! Who knew? My absolute two most favorite things in the world. Sleeping and drinking coffee. And I can put them together! You gotta love it!

  2. LOVE IT!!!!!!!  I'm afraid I have not mastered the 20 minute nap. Ever. I lay down and it's an hour or two – easy. But I'm willing to give it another shot. And I love coffee! One of life's greatest pleasures.
